* New egg masses · Tan or buff colored · Felt like in texture · Firm to touch · Irregular in shape, range in size from 1/2" x 3/4" to 2" x 3/4" * Old egg masses · May be more bleached in color · Feel soft and spongy * Pupal cases · Dark brown in color, hang in clusters attached to the base of branches or in bark crevices. |
| We would like to alert you to a potential problem that we may
have this coming shipping season.
Gypsy moth populations seem to be building in several areas of the Upper
Peninsula and Lower Michigan. The Michigan Department of Agriculture
inspectors are reporting an increase in the number of fields they are restricting
because of gypsy moth egg masses. This increase in egg masses means
that there is a much greater risk of shipping egg masses this year than
in any of the past several years and there is be a good chance that any
egg masses on trees this year will be viable.
|
We would encourage you to train each and every person who handles your
trees to look for egg masses on the branches and tree trunk. Some growers
have even offered a monetary reward to employees who find egg masses.
