Information on shoreline landscaping, and best practices for shoreline lake protection Lake Management

Thank you for visiting this web page on Lake Cadillac. My intent is to make this the center for communication on Lake Cadillac lake management with a focus on Eurasian Watermilfoil. My intent is to make this page as useful as possible. Please e-mail me with suggestions, possible additional links for information, and so on: Kurt H. Schindler, Wexford County MSU Extension Director: schindl9@msu.edu

The map to the left shows the June 2006 Eurasian Watermilfoil treatment areas. This map was prepared by ProgressiveAE based on a survey conducted June 8, 2006. About 130 acres was treated with the herbicide 2,4-D on June 14, 2006 (orange on the map). The treatment will be reassessed in two weeks (about June 26, 2006) and in a month (about July 8, 2006) to determine if further treatment is advised.

The area in yellow-green at the west end of the lake is to be treated with Eurasian Watermilfoil Weevil (Euhrychiopsis lecontei).

This map is showing the treatment areas, not where the Eurasian Watermilfoil is found growing. You can right-click on the map and select "view image" to see the map full size.

2005 Milfoil locations The map to the left shows where Eurasian Watermilfoil was found in 2005. If the assessment and treatment plan moves forward, a survey similar to this will be done again in spring 2006 and used to target treatment of the invasive plant. Surveys are done over each year, as the location of the plant changes from year to year.

Lake Cadillac Association Project Goal:

Reduce the presence of Eurasian Water Milfoil to acceptable levels.

However the goal is not to make Lake Cadillac weed-free. The existing variety of native aquatic plant life is important to the lake's ecosystem and an environmental balance for the lake. Eurasian Water Milfoil is the target nuisance plant, and its extensive presence in the lake threatens the lake environmental balance.

Anticipated Benefits
  • Improved surface appearance
  • Reduced interference with marine craft
  • Improved fishing
  • Reduction in decaying vegetative debris along the shoreline
  • Improved perception of the lake as a high quality recreation/tourism resource
  • Maintain/increase the local tourism base
  • Maintain/increase property values
Project Time frame
  • 2006 - Desire to experience immediate and significant Milfoil reduction
  • 2007 - Monitor and spot applications (as needed)
  • 2008 - Monitor and spot applications (as needed)
