Greetings from Dee:

Summer officially ended yesterday and we awoke to heavy frost this morning!  Because my 4-H Challenge duties kept me busy all weekend, I took yesterday to say goodye to my daughter, Juli and her family.  Eric is nearly three and Darin is four weeks old. I played with Eric and Grandpa cuddled Darin so Juli could pack for another two years in Russia. They will leave Detroit as scheduled and wait in Alaska for visas. Family members are always willing to help and my brother, the bush pilot, will accommodate them in his B & B.

My youngest daughter, Becca, just returned to work in Germany after a short holiday in Switzerland.  These girls were all just like your children -- 4-H members taking advantage of opportunities to host youth from other countries, showing at the fair, and enjoying life on the farm.  Our world is constantly shrinking. Encourage your kids to see beyond Wexford County and get involved in State and Regional programs.

Come to the Awards and Recognition program on Tuesday, October 22, at 7:00 p.m. and see what youth in this county have done. Your club can give a short skit or bring a project to display. It will be a fun evening for all in Manton United Methodist Church. The 4-H Council is furnishing pizza so be sure and call Kim Huffman, 824-6409, so we can have enough pizza for everyone!

Sincerely,
Dee

Family Nutrition Program

The Family Nutrition Program can help you learn how to stretch your food dollar; improve your shopping skills; make delicious, low cost, quick and easy meals and snacks; add a variety to your diet that can lead to better health; and manage your resources. Karen VanHaitsma, Wexford/Missaukee Counties Family Nutrition Program Associate, shares with you some "hot" tips for Halloween safety!

Halloween Safety & Eats

Halloween is just around the corner.  Something to keep in mind while having fun is safety. Be sure that any “dress up” costume does not hinder your ability to safely climb steps, cross streets or see where you are going.

One idea is to skip wearing a mask and use face-paint instead.  The following is a recipe for an easy to make face paint.

Homemade Face Paint
For each color, you will need:
1 tsp cornstarch
½ tsp cold cream (get at a dollar store)
½ tsp water
food coloring
small paintbrush or cotton swab

In a yogurt container or a muffin tin, stir together the cornstarch and cold cream until well-blended.  Add water and stir. Add food coloring, one drop at a time, until you get the desired color.  Paint simple designs on face away from eyes with the paintbrush or cotton swab.  This paint is easy to remove with soap and water!

After your Halloween celebration fun, sit back and enjoy eating the following!

Pumpkin Butter
1 - 15 oz can pumpkin
½ cup brown sugar
1/4 cup honey
1 tbs lemon juice
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/8 tsp ground cloves or allspice

Combine all ingredients in a medium sauce pan. Bring to a boil; stir frequently. Reduce heat; simmer 20 minutes or until thickened. Continue to stir frequently. Cool and pack into small airtight containers. Refrigerate or freeze.  Serve on bread or crackers.

National 4-H Week

Wexford County 4-H will celebrate 4-H's 100th year during National 4-H Week and salutes its adult volunteers!

The 4-H journey began in 1902 in Iowa and Ohio where local school educators connected with their agricultural colleges to start a program to teach farm children the basics of a farm and home management. Michigan joined in 1908 and started boys corn clubs in Muskegon and Mason Counties.

In 1914, the National Cooperative Extension Service system was formed under the leadership of the United States Department of Agriculture.

The 4-H movement experienced a growth of one million youth members nationwide by 1936. Michigan had the first International Farm Youth Exchange delegation.  In 1952, Michigan

committed to increase the 4-H program and training support of 4-H volunteers with the Michigan 4-H Foundation. A campaign was launched to build the nation’s first volunteer training center (Kettunen Center).

Many new programs were introduced as the years progressed. In the 1980s, Michigan 4-H became environmentally friendly with the Earth sheltered house at Kettunen Center and with a major shift in focus to developing youth instead of projects.

Michigan 4-H Youth Development is constantly looking at ways to help young people explore, experience, and achieve!

Kettunen Center Workshops

The following workshops offered at the Kettunen Center are now open for registration. If you see a class you are interested in, contact the office to enroll. If you are under 18 years old, a chaperone of the same sex must be identified before your registration will be accepted. The Wexford County 4-H Council will gladly finance your workshop, however, you must be willing to share your newly learned skills with others.  If you register and must cancel, you must give the office 48 hours notice or you will be billed for any expenses incurred.
