Fund Raiser!! -- Spread the News!!

4-H Youth from Osceola County are sponsoring a Pancake Supper to raise funds for improvements at the Northern District Fairgrounds!

The pancake supper will be Saturday, March 22, 2003, at the Chase Town Hall from 4-8 p.m.  The cost is only $4 per person, children age 5 and under free.

Greetings from Susan:

Dee is currently out of the country visiting her daughter, Wendy, and son-in-law, Carlos, and grandson, London, in Bolivia.  She’s missing out on all this sub-zero weather!  We hope she is enjoying all the sunshine and warmth while we deal with the cold and its major side-effect called snow.

If you have plans to participate in the Market Livestock Auction at the Northern District Fair this August, you need to have your registrations for your swine, sheep, goat, poultry, rabbit or cornish hen project in the office by April 7, 2003!  Orders for your chicks must be prepaid by April 25.  If you are planning a Market Duck project, be sure to stop in the office and pick up the addendum to the Market Livestock Rules that became effective January 8, 2003.

Local Club News

Vocal duo Monica Balcom and Caiti Hunt, Wexford County 4-H’ers, write and perform their own original songs and are now recording their own CD with the assistance of music teacher Todd Bolitho.

At the end of June, they will be traveling to New York to have the CD mastered, which means they will be upgrading the CD to commercial quality at a place known as “The Lodge”.

We wish Caiti and Monica lots of luck in their endeavor and look forward to listening to their songs on the radio!

Community Service Idea for March

March 2nd is Dr. Seuss' Birthday.  What better way to celebrate this great children's books author's birthday than by reading a book to a little buddy or to share some green eggs & ham!  Check out this web site:  http://nea.org

What IS Community Service?

We talk about community service in each newsletter... and know that you have some pretty basic questions for us.  Let’s try to help.

1. Well, first off, what is community service?
In 4-H, community service is voluntary action by an individual or a group of individuals that they perform without pay. Service to the community, through food drives, walking dogs at your local animal shelter or putting on clown paint and cheering up kids in the hospital, can be fun, in addition to helping you gain leadership and citizenship experiences. It can also give you that warm and fuzzy feeling inside that tells you you did something good for someone else.

2. So I want to do something, but how do I get involved?
First, figure out if you want to do something on your own or with your friends. If you want to make an impact through a group effort, plan your project as a group. If you're not sure if your friends would be up to a service project, just ask them! Studies show that nine out of ten people say yes when someone asks them to donate their time, and those who are asked to volunteer are four times as likely to do some service work as those who aren't asked. Give Five: About the Give Five Campaign. (2000). Retrieved November 19, 2001 from http://www.independentsector.org/give5/givefive.html

3. How do I start planning?
Now that you've assembled a group of people to work on a project, find something that interests everyone. If you're all really into fixing mechanical things, perhaps you could round up some run down bikes in your neighborhood and fix them up for underprivileged kids. You all like kids? Volunteer to read stories at a day care center. Need some ideas? Visit the "4-H Community Service Ideas" page on the Web at http://web1.msue.msu.edu/cyf/youth/commserv.html

4. Now that I have an idea, what do I do next?
What are you waiting for? Get out there and put your community serving-learning project plan into action by doing your best and having fun!

5. I'm done, now what?
When you've finished your project, be sure to take some time to think over how it went. What could you have done differently to make it better? Did you enjoy yourself? How could you get others involved? Also, be sure to celebrate. That's right! Give yourself a pat on the back and go grab some pizza as a group. You just joined the 109 million Americans who volunteer. Did you know that 59 percent of teenagers volunteer an average of 3.5 hours a week? Give Five: About the Give Five Campaign. (2000). Retrieved November 19, 2001 from http://www.independentsector.org/give5/givefive.html .
