Attention!
By now, most clubs have submitted their registrations for their club members, however, there are still a few missing in our database.  If you know of someone who has not been receiving their newsletters, make sure they contact their leader!  If they have internet access, they need to provide us with their e-mail address.

Members who have registered for a poultry project need to place their orders through the MSU Extension Office. Order deadline for Broilers, Cornish or Ducks is April 25.  Don't miss out!

Greetings from Dee:

Probably most of you are getting started with your clubs. I would like to come and do an impact survey with your club at your regular meeting. Please call to schedule a time... it may not happen until March 1 as I will be taking some vacation time in February to see my daughter and family in Bolivia.

Hopefully most of you are enjoying the winter weather. Be sure and watch for frost bite during the cold weather.
Leaders, there is a workshop for teens and leaders March 21-23 called Impact 2003. It is a chance for youth to experience how they can make a positive difference in life around them. For more information call Susan, my secretary. There is scholarship money available for three teens and an adult.

The Sterrett family will be hosting a student from Poland. We would love to have other families hosting international visitors.  Call today for an application.

Thanks to everyone who helped with First Night: Larry Solce, Ann Solce, Pam Clark, Wayne Williams, Jade Pearce, Marin Koco, Becky Skull, and Jill O’Donnell.

Linda Cronk , Family & Consumer Science Educator, shares information regarding the "Becoming a Love and Logic Parent" program currently offered in this county.

Becoming a Love & Logic Parent 8

Our schedule of Love and Logic classes for Winter/Spring 2003 is now available. We offer workshops throughout Wexford an Missaukee counties. Please join us and share in the delight of learning this healthy, practical perspective for raising loving/responsible children.  You can find our detailed class schedule in this article or by calling the MSU Extension office at 779-9480.

In recent 4-H newsletters, we have been exploring aspects of Becoming a Love and Logic Parent, developed by the Love and Logic Institute in Colorado. The following is some information for communicating effectively with kids, and demonstrating what we will allow at the same time.

Using Enforceable Statements
Many children have an uncanny ability to get us pulled into trying to control what we really cannot. Truly powerful Love and Logic parents recognize this and avoid this trap by using enforceable statements.  Enforceable statements tell kids what WE will do or allow... rather than trying to tell THEM what to do.

When we set Love and Logic limits by saying what WE will do or what WE will allow:

  • We avoid looking like a fool when we can't get our kids to do what we say.
  • We share some control with our children. As a result, they are much less likely to resist in order to regain control.
  • We avoid getting sucked into trying to control something we really can't.
Examples of Love and Logic Enforceable Statements:
  • I give treats to kids who protect their teeth by brushing.
  • Breakfast is served until 7:30  Get all you need to hold you until lunch.
  • My car is leaving at 8 a.m.
  • I'll listen as soon as your voice is as calm as mine.
  • I'll take you guys the places you want to go in the car when I don't have to worry about fighting in the back seat.
  • I'll do all of the things I do for you around here when I'm feeling respected.
  • I give allowance to those who finish their chores.
  • I'll provide TV and Nintendo when the chores are done.
  • I keep the toys I have to pick up. You can keep the ones you pick up.
  • I'll be happy to listen to you as soon as your father and I are finished talking.
  • I lend money to those who have collateral.
  • I lend the car to those who have made a deposit equal to the insurance deductible.
  • I'll reimburse you for your college tuition for those classes in which you earn a "B" or above.  I'll be happy to give you the money when I see your report card.

Horse Alert!
Some of you may have been horse leaders and members who have questions about this situation. Ten horses have dired at Findlay College from what is beliebed to be a strain of Equine Herpesvirus-1.  At the moment, the best information available about this can be found at www.TheHorse.com.  I will keep you informed to the best of my ability. In some parts of the state, we have several horses that travel back and forth between Findlay and Michigan.
