 Attention!
New 4-H Enrollment Year
The new 4-H 2003-2004 year has now begun.  If you would like to be involved in the planning of the Awards and Recognition Program, come to the September Leaders meeting on the 23rd at our office located at 401 N Lake Street. We hope to have our new 4-H membership forms available for each club at that time.  Please note that the new forms for this year have additional portions regarding ethnicity.  This is information that is needed for our Federal and State guidelines.  Please provide us with any change of information including mailing and email addresses.

Leaders are required to turn in an Annual Summary Financial Report for their club.  If you have yours ready, you may submit it to our office at any time.  If you need any assistance, don't hesitate to contact the office for support.

If you know of someone who has not been receiving their newsletters, make sure they contact their leader!  If they have internet access, they need to provide us with their e-mail address.

Greetings from Dee:

By the time you receive this newsletter, I will be visiting my daughter in Russia. Grandparenting is the greatest occupation on earth.  Eric is almost four and Darin is one.  They will keep me busy!

Please note the 4-H Leaders Association will be meeting September 23rd at 7 p.m.  We will be planning the Awards and Recognition Program.  Mark your calendars now to attend.

You had some excellent exhibits at the Northern District Fair. I heard lots of positive comments from parents of exhibitors about our interview process. This year I had almost all new evaluators and they did an outstanding job.

The theme for leader updates is: "Circle of Support."  We will look for ways we can help each other and make our program one of the best in the state.  We are looking for a VISTA volunteer who will work with 4-H teems through Citizenship, Leadership, and Service.  If you know someone 18 or older and interested, have them contact the MSU Extension office for more information.

Danielle Holman received a trophy for her exhibits in the Civic Center.

Elisha & Amanda Christie both took 1st place ribbons in their age categories for the cavy showmanship.

Caleb Mendoza did very well with his rabbit in showmanship. He was showing his rabbit for the first time.  Caleb also  took 1st place showmanship in showing his chicken, duck, and turkey.

We all had a great time!

MSU Arabian Horse Judging Workshop

The MSU Arabian Horse Judging workshop will take place Saturday, October 11 from 10 am to 1 pm at the MSU Horse Teaching and Research Center in East Lansing. There will be a Western Pleasure, Hunter Pleasure, and two Halter Classes. Cost is $5/student and $10/adult. All proceeds go to the MSU Horse Judging Team.

This is a great opportunity to work out youth and collegiate judging teams on high quality horses or just learn more about what the judge is looking for at the horse show. Judging will begin promptly at 10 am. After judging is completed, each class will be critiqued.  A collegiate judging team member will give a formal set of reasons on each class.

You may obtain the new revised 4-H Horse & Pony Project Show Rules & Regulations are now available. You may download yours from: http://web1.msue.msu.edu/cyf/youth/horse/horserules.html

A list of 4-H horse judges is also available: http://web1.msue.msu.edu/horsekids

Cooked Play Dough

An activity you and your child can do together that will create fun for several weeks is to make homemade play dough.  This could also be a great project to make for younger members on your seasonal gift list.

Ingredients:

1 cup white flour                   1 cup water
1/4 cup salt                           1 tsp food coloring
2 tsp cream of tartar              1 tbs vegetable oil

Directions:

Combine all ingredients in small saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring for about 3-5 minutes. When the mixture forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the pan, turn out onto a piece of plastic wrap. Cool slightly and knead until smooth.  Cover loosely until completely cooled.  Store in an airtight plastic container or plastic bag.

For a gift idea, include a few cute and fun cookie cutters, beads, and small plastic knife.
