Greetings from Dee:

Many thanks to all who came to the 4-H Awards and Recognition Program. We had a delightful program and plenty of pizza. What a great turnout ... over 100 people!

I still have about ten leaders who need to complete Leader Update. I will be holding one at 7:30 p.m. at the Lone Pine Inn in Kingsley on November 4. Come if you are available.

I have agreed to be part of the 2002-2003 4-H Club Impact Evaluation Pilot Project. This will give our county documentation that involvement in a 4-H club has some wonderful impacts on youth! I need to pre-survey youth members aged 9-19 that have been a 4-H member for two years or less. They will each need a signed and completed Parental Consent Form. I hope to do this in November and December. I will be calling you to see when your club meets so I can come and give the survey. Younger members can also take the pre-survey if they want. It will take about 30 minutes. The post-survey will be done at the end of your club year.

I did not arrange a county wide project for Make-A-Difference Day (October 26) as I was out of town. Hopefully, some of you are helping in your own neighborhoods. Let me know what you did so I can put it in next month’s newsletter!

Horse Club Leader, Laurie Webb of Fife Lake, recently rode in the Otsego County Ride-A-Thon, and designed her sponsor fees to the Wexford County PEP Program!  Many thanks to you, Laurie!

Thank you to the 2001-2002 4-H Leaders Association board members: Candy Prince, Yvonne Meyer, Anita Hunt, Wayne Williams, Becky Barton, Tammy Evers, Megan Meyer, Jade Pearce, and Erika Prince

New 4-H Year!

The new 4-H year has begun and registrations are trickling in.  If you are in need of additional enrollment forms for new members, please contact the office and we will be happy to provide them to you.

Please return your forms as soon as possible so our database will be up-to-date.  Please be sure to check to see if member and leader's current e-mail addresses are included so mailings can go directly to their home electronically instead of through the post office. This will save the 4-H office financially through both paper and postage!

Important Notice:  This will be your last newsletter you will receive unless your enrollment form has been received in this office!

Community Service Idea        for November

Club members should decide what community group they would like to assist with for the holidays. Contact that group. Help would certainly be welcomed in serving Thanksgiving dinner at Community Soup Kitchens. Other agencies needing assistance may be: Senior Citizens Centers, Assisted Living Centers, Nursing Homes, Council on Aging, or Project Christmas.  Giving a helping hand to others is actually a gift to yourself!

The Family Nutrition Program can help you learn how to stretch your food dollar; improve your shopping skills; make delicious, low cost, quick and easy meals and snacks; add a variety to your diet that can lead to better health; and manage your resources. Shelly Psaros and  Karen VanHaitsma, Wexford/Missaukee Counties Family Nutrition Program Associates, share with you some interesting facts and an easy and delicious salad recipe.

Did you know these facts about apples?

  • A medium apple with skin has 81 calories
  • 0 grams fat
  • 4 grams fiber
  • 1 lb equals approximately 3 medium-sized apples
  • 6-8 medium-sized apples equals 9 inch pie
  • Bumps/bruises cause dark spots
  • Raw meat juices can contaminate them
  • Scrub apples with vegetable brush with cool running water before eating or preparing them to make them safe to eat

Apple Carrot Salad

2 c shredded carrots
1-1/2 c diced unpeeled apples
1/2 c raisins
1/4 c chopped walnuts (optional)
1/2 c mayonnaise salad dressing
1 tbs honey
1 tbs lemon juice

Combine carrots, apples, raisins and walnuts; set aside.

Volunteers Needed for First Night Cadillac 2003

I know it's only November, but big events don't occur overnight -- there's a lot of planning involved. If you want to become involved in this fun and exciting community event, let us know! This would be a great opportunity to do some community service work!

Spring Break Trip

A Spring Break trip is being planned for North Region youth. It will be a Disaster Relief Community Service Project.

The best date for most counties is March 28-April 4, 2003. Home schoolers are welcome! It will probably be a bus trip to Louisiana because of summer flooding and an autumn hurricane.

If you will be 13 years old and are interested, contact the office right away so we can keep you up-to-date. More details will be posted in the newsletter as we receive them!
