Greetings from Dee:

I always write this after the rest of the newsletter is completed – this way I can mention anything I want stressed or added. There are many opportunities for involvement beyond the county level. Remember the 4-H Leaders Association is usually willing to fund scholarships to 4-H learning activities. Check out the summer camps available. You can get more details on line or call the office for more information.

This has been a busy month as I represented the Michigan 4-H staff at the Public Issues Leadership Development Conference in Washington D.C.  Presidents of four other MI Extension organizations joined me as we visited legislatures.

May 14 we had 82 people attend the Pork Assurance Program! This weekend, I will be at Wilderness State Park leading the 4-H Challenge Orientation. Sunday through Friday, I will host a Rotary Exchange adult from Scotland and at the end of the month is the orientation for the Polish Exchange families.  I am still looking for hosts for two seventeen year old girls.

We will hold the Proud Equestrian Program (Therapeutic Horseback Riding) at the horse arena at the fairgrounds.  If you are 14 years old or older, come by and be a side walker Tuesday or Wednesday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., June 10 through July 16.

Local News

The Kountry Bunnies have been at it again!  This club has been incredibly busy thinking up ways to earn money to purchase supplies for projects and funds to help pay for educational activities like the recent Rabbit & Cavy Show reported in last month's newsletter.

Leader Bev Sutton reported that members, Kody Sisson, Caleb Mendoza, Joe Mendoza, Ashley Leja, Kim Devore, Angela Sutton, Kim Mowbray, and Danielle Holman, along with adults Cindy Sisson, Rose Holman, and Bev Sutton, recently held a fund raiser with hot dogs, lemonade, and candy bars at Tractor Supply Company raising over $300!  They also have an ongoing sale of candy bars.  Way to take initiative!

Horse Leader, Yvonne Meyer, was recently acknowledged by the Missaukee County MSUE for helping with evaluations for the Missaukee County 4-H Achievement Day. Thanks Yvonne!

4-H Standardbred Project

Have you ever thought about raising and training a young horse?  Do you want to learn about marketing horses? An enormous opportunity awaits experienced youth interested in horses.

In the 4-H Standardbred Horse Project, you will be responsible for the care, feeding, and training of a Standardbred foal for one year. You will receive the foal in October and then sell it about one year later at a Michigan Standardbred sale. During the year, you will attend seven meetings and activities designed to teach you more about hose care, careers, and the harness racing industry.  You will have opportunities to mentor with some of Michigan's best trainers and breeders!

Applications are available at the office.  Deadline: July 1

Linda Cronk , Family & Consumer Science Educator, shares information including tips for parenting in times of trauma, reproduced with permission by "Parents as Teachers National Center -- 1-866-PAT4YOU  www.patnc.org

Tips for Parents in Times of Trauma

Children’s basic needs remain the same, especially during time of crisis. Remember the importance of routines - try to keep regular mealtimes and bedtime.  Spend quiet time reading each night to create calm.

Turn off TV and radio when children are around. You control the information they need to have and how it is presented. Young children need to know few details about traumatic events and do not need to hear details repeated over and over.

Answer questions in an age-appropriate way and reassure children. What they need to hear most is that the adults around them will take care of and protect them.

Try to stay calm as possible around children. It is appropriate for children to see adults showing emotion, but it frightens them when their parents lose control. If you feel emotional, try to remove yourself briefly until you can calm down.

Children can be very resilient, if they feel listened to, supported, and taken care of by parents and caretakers. They are not little adults. They need to be in a caring environment that fits their developmental needs, even in times of crises.
Take care of yourself and address your own needs. This will allow you to take care of your child.

Do not be afraid to seek help for yourself or your child if reactions or coping become difficult to manage. These are unusual circumstances. It is normal not to have all the answers.

Outdoor Expo

The whole family can enjoy hands-on outdoor activities at the fourth annual Outdoor Expo, June 21-22 on the campus of Michigan State University. Outdoor Expo celebrates Michigan's natural heritage and offers opportunities to try a wide variety of outdoor activities on 80 acres of MSU's south campus.
Outdoor Expo is an event where people come together to learn more about the great outdoors. Many families come to try fishing or shooting or canoeing for the first time, said Thomas Coon, associate dean in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. We are hoping that once they have tried these outdoor pursuits, they will become more involved in outdoor activities and take a greater interest in protecting our natural resources heritage.
Outdoor Expo villages will offer archery, fishing, outdoor living, shooting sports, sporting dogs, canoeing and kayaking, camping and backyard conservation demonstrations and activities. Experts from Michigan outdoor organizations and businesses will help visitors try their hand at fly casting, rock climbing, skeet shooting, kayaking and many other activities.
This year, we have expanded into a wider variety of outdoor activities, said program coordinator Sandi Bauer, of the MSU College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the sponsor of Outdoor Expo. We have folks from the Michigan League of Bicyclists; a rock-climbing wall, and a trail camp demonstration by the Michigan Horse Council. There is truly something for everyone.
Outdoor Expo will also feature an outdoor marketplace with commercial exhibitors offering a wide range of outdoor gear and services. National outdoors sports vendors will show and demonstrate their wares. Conservation groups will also be on hand to provide information on Michigan's outdoor resources and offer tips for enjoying and sustaining the great outdoors.
You don't need to travel far to enjoy outdoor recreation diversity, Coon said. We' are fortunate to have an ecosystem right here in Michigan that supports a good variety of wildlife and woodland resources that should be enjoyed by everyone.
Outdoor Expo will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 21 and June 22. Admission is $5; free for children 15 and under when accompanied by an adult. Free parking will be provided at the parking lot on the corner of Farm Lane and Mt. Hope Road on the MSU campus in East Lansing. Free shuttle buses will take visitors to the Outdoor Expo site. (There is no visitor parking available at the Outdoor Expo site.)
Additional information on Outdoor Expo is available on the Outdoor Expo website: www.outdoorexpo.msu.edu.   If you do not have internet access, stop into the office.
