Greetings from Dee: 

Important dates for market livestock members: All sheep, swine, goats, chicken, cornish, duck, and rabbit projects need to be enrolled by Monday, April 5th. 
 
May 8th will be the weigh-in for all large animals at the Cadillac Fairgrounds from 10:00 to noon. 
Large animal record books will be distributed at the weigh-in.  You must be at this weigh-in to show at the Northern District Fair. 

Newsflash: I just learned there will be a lamb sale April 17th in Falmouth with viewing at 4:30 p.m. and the sale starting at 6:00 p.m. Call 825-0001 for more information. 

Wexford County will be well represented at Capitol Experience this year.  Andrew Benson, Megan Benson, Caleb Mendoza, and David Sisson will be learning more about government, interacting with legislatures, and dealing with current issues of their choice March 14-17.  Mr. Sisson will be a chaperone at the event. 

Most of you know I will be traveling to Poland with Michigan 4-Hers for a month this summer.  Jade Pearce from Wexford County 4-H will be on the trip too!  Jade has hosted many Japanese youth in her home. 

4-H has many opportunities for learning beyond the county border.  Take time to see what is in the newsletter and consider attending a regional or state event.  The Exploration Days booklets will be in the office March 11th with registration beginning the following week.

Club leaders are encouraged to attend the Wexford County Leaders Association meeting at the MSU Extension Office Conference Room on Tuesday, March 9 at 7 p.m..  Get involved in this year’s planning!

Exchange Opportunities

Bring the world into your home this summer by hosting a Japanese student!  These young people are excited to learn about your family’s customs and culture, your values, foods, clothes, and lifestyle. 

The dates of the exchange are July 22 through August 19 and is open to any family with a youth of the same age (12 through 16) and gender as the Japanese youth. 

The 2004 International 4-H Youth Exchange (Upper Midwest Ambassador to Australia) Program for 4-H Teen Leaders and Older Youth will visit Victoria, Australia.  The approximate dates are June 20 to July 20. 

4-H youth from North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Missouri, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin between the ages of 16 and 19 are invited to experience working side-by-side with host family members in the Victoria area.

Have you ever wondered why you placed the way you did at a horse show?  Wouldn't it nice to have time for more feedback from the judge so you know what you need to work on and can become more successful?

2004 State 4-H Horse Jamboree

The schedule of events and registration packets for the 2004 State 4-H Horse Jamboree taking place April 23-25, 2004 ar now in the office.  Stop in the office and see Dee for more information. 
 

MSU Merillat Equine Experience

Spend a day learning how to take better care of your horse on Saturday, April 17, from 9 am to 5 pm at the MSU Merillat Equine Center.  Learn about equine dentistry, forage analysis, reproduction or attend a training session.  For more information, call Dr. John Berends at (517) 432-6164. 
 

2004 Winter Horse Program

The 2004 Winter Horse Program will hold two sessions of classes. The first, April 20, will feature two classes: "Why Manure and Water Don't Mix" and "Control of Parasites." The second, April 22, will feature: "Hay Management Strategies" and "Care of the Older Horse." 

Call the office for directions to these classes in West Branch or for a registration form. 
 

Tack Swap & Craft Sale

The Osceola County 4-H PEP Program's annual Tack Swap & Craft Sale will occur on March 23, from 11 a.m. through  8 p.m. at the Mio Community Center.  Admission is $1.00.  Vender spaces are available. Call Denise Rooker at (231) 848-2054 for more information. 
 
 

Michigan Horse Council Youth Leadership Symposium

The Michigan Horse Council Youth Leadership Symposium will take place Saturday, March 27, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the MSU Pavilion in East Lansing.  Entries are due March 22.  To obtain a copy of the registration form, contact the office. 
 

Standardbred Project

Have you ever thought about raising and training a young horse?  Do you want to learn about marketing horses?  If you are ready for more challenges in your 4-H program, the Michigan 4-H Standardbred Project might be just what you're looking for. 

In this project, you will be responsible for the care, feeding, and training of a Standardbred foul for one year. You will receive the foal in October and then sell it about one year later at a Michigan Standardbred sale.  During the year, you will attend seven meetings and activities designed to teach you more about horse care, careers, and the harness racing industry. You will have opportunities to mentor with some of Michigan's best trainers and breeders.  Application available until July 1.

4-H Dog Fun March

Come enjoy a full-filled day at the Sanilac County 4-H Fairgrounds in Sandusky on Saturday, May 22. The 4-H Dog Fun Match is open to anyone of any age. They need not be a 4-H member or have an A.K.C. dog.

Market Livestock Registrations

The deadline for registering market livestock projects for steer, dairy beef, and turkey has passed.  The next important date is the April 5 registration of all other market livestock projects. 

At this time, we have 44 projects already reigstered! They are: 
3   - Market Livestock Chicken 
3   - Market Livestock Cornish Hen 
4   - Market Livestock Dairy Beef 
5   - Market Livestock Sheep 
14 - Market Livestock Steer 
15 - Market Livestock Swine 
10 - Market Livestock Turkey 

The mandatory weigh-in date for steerm dairy beef, swine, sheep, and goats is May 12 at the Northern District Fairgrounds. Sheep will now be tattooed at that time. Be sure to read your 2004 Nothern District Fair General Rules! 

Major rule changes for 2004 include: possession dates for steers and dairy beef; the addition of market ducks; private treaty sale guidelines, seudorabies testing equipment for sqine; rules for bringing in and weigh-in for more than one swine or sheep; and the tattooing of sheep. 
 

Rabbit Workshop

A rabbit workshop is being held in St. Clair County on April 3 at the Community building at Goodells County Park in Goodells, MI.  Registration is 8:30 - 8:45 a.m.  Skill-A-Thon Workshop: 9 a.m. through Noon.  Bring your own lunch.  There will be a Showmanship contest and Skill-A-Thon contest running concurrently beginning at 1 p.m. 

The morning will be spent learning about selecting, raising, and showing rabbits.  The afternoon will test the information and skills you learned in the morning.  Topics to be covered include judging terminology & score cards, rabbit sexing, tattooing, basic health care, rabbit anatomy, disqualifications and faults, showmanship tips, cage safety & sanitation, variety colors "telling them apart", rabbit configuration "what to look for".

Goat Information

The Sanilac County 4-H Small Animal Committee is planning a goat showmanship workshop on May 16 from 2-5 p.m. at the Sanilac County 4-H Fairgrounds. For more information, contact the office. 

The Marketing Meat Goats for the Commercial Producer workshop will take place March 27 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the United Producers Sale Yard in Battle Creek, MI.  For more information call the office. Reservations due March 17. 

Please note that the ANR handbook listed the wrong date for the Spring Goat Day.  The correct date is Saturday, March 13. For more information, stop in the office for a copy of the ANR handbook. 
 

Rabbit & Cavy Show

The rabbit & cavy show begins at 9 a.m. at the MSU Pavilion. No pre-registration is required. On site registration begins at 6 a.m.  The Michigan 4-H Rabbit & Cavy Show is sponsored by Michigan 4-H Youth Development Programs.  Rabbit and Cavy breed classes only.  Judging by ARBA Standards (breed, fur, meat).  No showmanship classes offered. For registration forms or other information, contact the office. 
 

Fair Pig Auction

A "Fair Pig Auction" will be held Saturday, March 27, at 1 p.m. at the Fancy Creek Farm in Chase.  There will be approximately 100 quality show pigs to be sold, Duroc X, York X, Hamp X, and Purebred.  pigs have been vacinated and wormed with Ivomec. 
 

Dairy Youth Programs & Events

Dairy Judging Field Day at the MSU Pavilion in East Lansing will be held on March 25.

It's not too late to get involved in this new program. During the 2003 Dairy Days, a 4-H member earned over $1600! 

Dairy Days will be held the week of July 19 at the MSU Pavilion. More information will become available in April.

Michigan Week Photo Contest

Michigan youth, aged 9 to 19, interested in photographing a Michigan historic site, are invited to participate in the Michigan Week 2004 Youth Photo Contest.  Youth may submit up to two photos; these can be two different views of the same historic site or two difference historic sites.  Photo submission is April 1, 2004. 

For this photo contest, a historic site is a building (such as a house), a structure (such as a bridge), an area (such as a neighborhood, a fairgrounds or a business district) or an object (such as a monument) that is 50 years old or older.  A specific historic site would be the Second Baptist Church in Detroit, which was founded in 1836 by former slaves and served as a station on the Underground Railroad.

2006 National 4-H Calendar

National 4-H Supply Service wants to know how 4-H has changed your life.  Your story may be used in the 2006 National 4-H Calendar. Sending in a submission may get you a free gift certificate to use in the 4-H Source Book. 

The 2006 calendar theme is "How 4-H Changed My Life!"  You must tell the what, when, where, why, and how so everyone can understand how 4-H changed your life. 

One story for each month will be featured in the calendar and the author will receive one $10 gift certificate towards a future purchase in the 4-H Source Book.  Submission deadline: April 30, 2004.

Mark of Excellence Award

It is that time again.  Information about the 2004 4-H Mark of Excellence Award is now also available on the web at:

The forms are available to download in MS Word format which are easy to use.  These forms ask for a lot of information so please get them as soon as possible so that you are not overwhelmed at the last minute. 
 

$10,000 Environmental Excellence Award

The Michigan 4-H Youth Conservation Council is one of eight recipients of $10,000 SeaWorld/Busch Gardens/Fujifilm Environmental Excellence Awards from the SeaWorld and Busch Gardens Conservation Fund. 

The M4-HYCC was selected third of 117 entries for the award.  Judges look for youth-driven projects that have significant environmental impact and creatively and innovatively approach environmental problem solving. 

Our own 4-H'ers Jim Solce and Courtney Hunt, were responsibile for the development of the award through their hard work and efforts.

If you would like a 2004 copy of the 4-H Centennial Source Catalog stop by the office. With the holidays coming, this might be very helpful in providing lots of good gift ideas for 4-H members and their families! 
 

Sight for Students

The Cadillac Area YMCA through the YMCA of the USA has partnered with VSP in its Sights for Students Program.  Through this program free eye care and eyewear are available to needy children.

Kids On Farms: Telling the Story

A two-day workshop for journalists to elevate the level of discussion regarding the complexities of children's work and play on farms and raches in the upper Midwest will take place June 18-19 in Marshville, WI.  he workshop will be filled with opportunities to interact with farm families, newsmakers, researchers, and uniuque agricultural sites representing the diversity of children's experience in agriculture.

Learning Science Through the Arts Camp

Science Camp at the Kettunen Center is scheduled for June 27 - 30, 2004.  The theme this year is Jump into Foods and Fitness!!  Making the necessity of eating right and staying fit, FUN!  Through interactive games new experiences and tasty activities, 9-14 year olds will be discovering the science of healthy eating habits & physical activity that can last a lifetime. They will train their  bodies and minds by experiencing low impact kick boxing, hip hop dance and aerobics to modern music.  They will also relax to the exciting Art of Yoga and Tai Chi, and create their own exercise equipment.  Along with the usual hiking, swimming, boating, campfires and camp fun, we are looking forward to a great time.

2004 Higgins Lake Environmental School

The Higgins Lake Environment School was established to promote a better undrstanding of the complex relationships between humans and our environment. 

The setting for this environmental school is the Ralph A. MacMullan Conference Center, located in Michigan's beautiful north woods on the shore of Higgins Lake.  The location is rich in environmental resources and outdoor recreation opportunities. 

There are three sessions:  Session A, July 11-16  Environmental Education and Outdoor Science: Methods and Concepts;  Session B, July 18-23  Exploring Education Opportunities; and Session C, July 25-30  Understanding Our Environment.

2004 Exploration Days

If you are between the ages of 12 and 19, mark your calendars for June 22-25, 2004!  Exploration Days is a great two days on the Michigan State University campus.  Attend two classes of your choice and meet new friends from around the state!  Scholarships may be available. Check out the MSU Website for more information on  Exploration Days! 
 

Camp Counselor Training 

There will be a camp counselor training on May 1 for anyone age 14 or over who is interested in working this summer as a camp counselor.  This training will take place at the Ryder Center at Saginaw Valley State University.  Contact Dee if you're interested. 
 

Camp Living Waters 

Our local 4-H Camp will take place again at Camp Living Waters located in Luther, Michigan June 9-11.  If you're looking for a camp for the younger set (ages 8-12) this is a wonderful choice.  Your young camper will enjoy activities such as archery, crafts, leathercraft, swimming, sports, skits, campfires, and more! Cost is only $90.  Scholarships are available. 
 

Camp Kidwell 

Several types of camps are available at Camp Kidwell located in Allegan, MI.  Select your choice of Healthy Youth Week or High Adventure Teen Week Camps at $175-225/week each.  Scholarships are available for Wexford County 4-H members. 

Healthy Youth Week Camp:  Week long camps by age from June 13-18 through August 1-6.

Great Lakes Natural Resources Camp 

Camp Chickagami is a great camp for teens aged 13-15.  The dates are August 1 through August 7; Cost is $225.  Enjoy fishing, snorkeling, swimming, sailing, hiking, bird-watching, lighthouse tours, crafts, community service projects, quarry trip, photogaphy, orienteering, journaling, and more!  Located between Alpena and Rogers City, the camp has dormitory-style housing and shower facilities.  You do not have to be a 4-H member to attend.  Deadline for early registation: April 30.  After June 15, cost is $230.  (Fee includes meals, snacks, lodging, T-shirt, and program & activity costs.  Wexford County 4-H members may apply for a scholarship
 

4-H Learning Science Through the Arts Camp 

This camp takes place June 27-30 and is open to all 4-H and Non-4H youth aged 9-14 at the Kettunen Center in Tustin, Michigan. Enjoy Interactive Theatre, Outdoor Photography, Wildflower Discovery, Nature, Arts & Crafts & more.  Outside Recreation includes:  Hiking, Swimming, Boating, Fishing, Group Sports and Games, Campfires & Archery. Cost is: $125;  4-H member scholarships are available.  Check in occurs on Sunday: 1 p.m.    Check out: Wednesday, 2:30 p.m.    Deadline to register: June 30, 2004. 
 

YMCA Camp at Camp Torenta 

Join your friends, old and new, at Camp Torenta this summer!  Each camp day is packed full of programs and activities including swimming, boating, hiking, cookouts, and arts & crafts, all on Lake Mitchell shoreline in the Cadillac area!  There are two camps to choose from: 

Day Camp   
The day camp is packed full of camp activities. Each program day begins at 9 a.m. and wraps up at 4:00 p.m.  A terrific lunch is provided in the dining hall and an extended camp program is available for those that need an early drop-off or late pick-up.  Transportation is available at select pickup points through the Cadillac Wexford County Transportation Agency.  Sessions available are: June 14-18, June 21-25, June 28-July 1, July 5-9, July 12-16, July 19-23, July 26-30, and Aug 2-6.  Cost for YMCA members is $85/week 1child or $75/each additional child; Cost for others: $110 and $100/each additional child. 

Resident Camp   
One week of boys' camp and one week of girls camp is available in July. Summer camp at Camp Torenta is a local tradition -- here's your chance to create your own memories.  Camp begins at check-in on Sunday evening and wrap-up on Friday with family dinner cookout.  In addition to all the activities available during day camp, there are those special experiences only available at an overnight camp. 
 

Coed Camp: July 11 - 17 
Boys Camp: July 18 - July 23 
Girls Camp: July 25 - July 30 

Resident Camp Fees: YMCA Program Members: $195;  Others: $225
