Greetings from Dee:

I hope all of you are as excited about summer as I am! Watching the youth who participate in the therapeutic horseback riding classes is a special part of my summer.  We still welcome volunteers 14 or older.  We will meet at Sunup Acres on Tuesday evenings during June and July.

Northern District Fair Exhibitors: Please read the article inside to see how you can earn $100!

My daughter and her family from Russia will be in Michigan this summer awaiting the arrival of my fourth grandchild. In addition, my daughter and granddaughter from California will be here for a couple weeks. Do you think it will actually get warm enough for swimming?

The Benson family and the Funck family will be hosting boys from Japan for a month. Let them know if you have some club activities they might enjoy. Cindy Funck is the Parent Educator in our office.

I have included an article from our Food and Nutrition Program Associate, Shelly Psaros.  Some of you should find it useful!

Local Club News

Elizabeth Funck recently attended the Adventure Education workshop at the Kettunen Center. Liz will be using the information she received as she works as a Camp Counselor this summer at Camp Living Waters.

Several 4-H adults and teens participated in the Grand Opening celebration for the new Tractor Supply Company (TSC).  They greeted the public outside the store with grilled hot dogs and a drink while Patricia Sattler's club, 4-H Drama Club, shared their new Kettunen training by making balloon animals for children to take home. Other clubs involved were:

Fishing Frenzy:  Larry Solce, Jim Solce, and Dave Solce
4-H Drama Club: Patti Sattler and Erin Sattler
St. Ann's 4-H Club: Lori Videto and Katelyn Videto
Manton Community Club: Kim Huffman, Caitlin Huffman, Susan Brettschneider, Catie Brettschneider, Kama Sterrett, Walden Sterrett, and Addy Sterrett
Happy Trails: Jade Pearce
Bobbi's Bunch: Bobbi Jo Pyle, Spencer LaPointe, and Ashley Pyle
Royal Riders: Tammy Evers, Liz Evers, Jessica Barton, Natalie Slater, and Caroline Slater
Kingsley 4-H Challenge Club: Kip Madison, Katie Madison, and Melisa Madison
Forest View Adventure Club: Ann Solce
High Horizons 4-H Club: Angie Ferris, Jesse Farmer, and Jacob Farmer
4-H Educator: Dee Williams
Friends of 4-H: Andy Klinger, Wayne Williams, Wendy Garzon, and Carlos Garzon.

After expenses, Wexford County 4-H made over $700!! Job well done!  Thanks to all of you who participated.

Recently, one of our new 4-H Leaders needed an EIN number.  It's come to our attention that the telephone number to the I.R.S. in Cincinnati has been changed to:  (866) 816-2065 and fax (859) 669-5760.  Please change this number in your paperwork!  If you need any assistance in obtaining your E.I.N., contact the office.

Jim Solce is a member of the first-ever Cadillac Science Olympiad team that brought home 42 medals from the regional competition at Mid-Michigan Community College.  Because it was the Cadillac team's first-ever science competition, students had no idea what to expect. Earning medals in each event the team entered was a total surprise for them!  Congratulations Jim and team!                                                                Back to the Top

Family Nutrition Program

The Family Nutrition Program can help you learn how to stretch your food dollar; improve your shopping skills; make delicious, low cost, quick and easy meals and snacks; add a variety to your diet that can lead to better health; and manage your resources.

Shelly Psaros, Wexford/Missaukee Counties Family Nutrition Program Associate, shares with you the following "cool" recipes to fight the summer heat.

Frozen Fruit Pops
1 cup mashed bananas
10 oz frozen sliced strawberries, partially thawed
20 oz can crushed pineapple
2 oranges
4 oz paper cups
plastic spoons

An adult should cut the oranges in half. Let the children squeeze the juice and pulp from the oranges. Stir together the orange juice, mashed bananas, strawberries, and pineapple. Mix well. Spoon into paper cups. Insert a plastic spoon into the center of each cup. Freeze until solid.

Orange Fun-Sicles
6 oz orange juice concentrate
1 cup plain low-fat yogurt
3/4 cup water
1 tsp vanilla
plastic drinking straws

Grape Fruity Punch
40 oz grape juice, unsweetened
1 Tbs. orange juice concentrate
1 cup water
1 tsp lemon juice
orange slices

Mix all liquid ingredients.  Add a slice of orange to each cup and enjoy!

Watermelon Pops
1 cup seedless watermelon chunks
1 cup orange juice
1 cup water
4 oz paper cups
plastic spoons

Place watermelon chunks, orange juice, and water in a blender or food processor. Process until smooth. Pour mixture into small paper cups. Insert a plastic spoon into the center of each cup. Freeze until solid.

Banana Pops
bananas (one-half per child)
1/2 cup orange juice
granola or grape nuts cereal
popsicle sticks
plastic wrap or aluminum foil

Have the children peel the bananas. Cut each banana in half lengthwise. Push a popsicle stick in the center of each half.  Have each child dip his banana in orange juice and roll in cereal. Wrap pops in plastic wrap or foil and freeze.

Melon Cooler
1 cup seedless melon chunks
1/4 cup apple juice concentrate
1 cup milk

Mix all ingredients in a blender or food processor. Blend until smooth. (This is a good recipe for using overripe melon.)

Attention: Exhibitors at the Northern District Fair!

To celebrate 100 years of 4-H, the Wexford County 4-H Council is offering a $100 prize to the most outstanding 4-H Club Centennial display in the Civic Center and in the Livestock Barns.

In the Civic Center we will be looking at creativity, theme, percent of members participating, and educational impact. If a club exhibits in more than one barn, please choose only one barn for your display.  In the Livestock Barns we will be looking at creativity, theme, and percent of members participating.

You may stop into the office and request a copy of the following bulletins:  Making Posters, Promote 4-H With Successful Visuals, or Planning Your Exhibits

Some of the things you might want to consider doing are including 4-H projects or bulletins from the past in your display, interviewing people who were in 4-H in the past, getting information I
have available on 4-H during the different decades and sharing it in your exhibit. Be creative and let the people coming to the fair see how 4-H has changed over the years!
