In the 4-H Standardbred Horse Project, you will be responsible for the care, feeding, and training of a Standardbred foal for one year. You will receive the foal in October and then sell it about one year later at a Michigan Standardbred sale. During the year, you will attend seven meetings and activities designed to teach you more about hose care, careers, and the harness racing industry.  You will have opportunities to mentor with some of Michigan's best trainers and breeders!

2003 PEP Program

The Proud Equestrian Program (PEP) is off to a great start this summer with many new and returning students.  This program has become so popular that we have had the need to add an additional day with two classes per week for a total of five classes!

This year, we are utilizing the horse arena at the Northern District Fair.  This central location has made it easier for riders to participate.

Special thanks to our instructor, Rich Fitch, and volunteer Jill Byard for trailering in the horses every week, and to our many volunteers for making this program possible!

If you are age 14+, have a little time on your hands on Tuesday or Wednesday evenings, and are comfortable around horses, come out to the fair grounds.  We can always use extra volunteers!

Monkeypox and Your Rabbit Project

The Northern District Fairboard made the decision at Thursday's meeting, after MUCH discussion, to abide by the
Michigan Department of Agriculture/Center of Disease Control's Order prohibiting the exhibition of rabbits and pocket pets at fairs and other exhibitions, due to the Monkey Pox outbreaks.  This will mean that there will be NO rabbits or other pocket  pets allowed to enter the fairgrounds for participation in the Northern District Fair in Cadillac in August.  This decision was  made with the best interests of the 4H youth and their animals in mind.  While this will be difficult for some 4H'ers to  understand, the health and well-being of everybody involved is of the utmost importance in a situation like this.

If anybody has any questions, please direct them to Candy Prince, Small Animal Superintendent at (231) 775-8439 or write minirex@voyager.net .  I will try to answer any questions that may arise.
