Northern District Fair 4-H Theme Contest

Our theme this year is "Let Freedom Ring."  The Wexford County 4-H Council is offering $50 for first place; $30 for second; and $20 for third place for the best barns and civic center display/presentation.

The Honor Guard from the Amvets post in Cadillac will be judging the themes in the Civic Center on Tuesday, August 12, from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The barns will be judged on Tuesday, August 12, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.  Be sure to sign up to schedule an interview.  The schedule sheet will be located in the Civic Center on Saturday, August 9 and at weigh-in on Sunday, August 10.

Last year, we had many magnificent displays.  We look forward to the same this year.  Good Luck!

      A 4-H Fable

    There once was a boy
    Won some ribbons of blue;
Came home from the fair with
    A big trophy, too.
With a voice glad and proud
    He said to his dad,
    "Tis the very best year
    That I've ever had."

    Said his very wise dad,
    "Son, I'd like to hear
    Why you think that this
    Was such a fine year."
    Why, Dad, you well know
    All the prizes I've won
How I've come out of top
    In most things I've done.

    Just look at the ribbons
    To hand on the wall
    And think of the money
    I've made since last fall.
    From premium checks
    And a big auction price;
    You can't help but think
    Cash and ribbons are nice.

But the man said, "My son,
    You're not thinking right.
    Blue ribbons, tis true
    Are better than white.
    But ribbons will fade
    And trophies grow old,
    Money's soon spent
    And fame soon grows cold."

    "The important things, son,
    Are not ribbons or pins,
    And sometimes it's really
    The loser who wins!
    Now here are some things
    Most important, it's true
    Your 4-H experience
    Has accomplished for you."

                  by Mrs. Esther Chandler

"You've been taught how a
Business meeting is run.
This knowledge will help you
In your years to come.
You've conquered the fear
Of addressing a crowd.
You've learned how to stand up
And talk nice and loud."

"Patience you've learned
In your projects, too.
As well as some skills
That will always help you.
You've the fine feeling
It gives to lend
A glad helping hand
To a stranger or friend."

"You've learned to cooperate
With majority rule,
To give in with grace
And not be a fool
Who always must have
His very own way,
Be it in club work,
In school or at play."

"You've learned how to lose
Without making a 'beef'.
You know the judge judges
To his best belief.
You've learned how to win
Without boasting too loud.
A kid can lose friends
If he's overly proud."

"These are the things
Most important to you.
You'll remember and use them
All your life through.
They'll help you become
A very find man.
They'll do more for you
Than a prize ever can."

Show Apparel Tips

Something of interest –  especially to beginning 4-H showmen:

All show apparel should be clean, fit properly, and be free of design and advertisements. This doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune on proper show apparel. The following are guidelines to be used when putting a show outfit together.
Poultry: Members should wear a white long sleeve shirt (long sleeves give the finished look to an outfit). Black pants or jeans should also be worn. Some members choose a simple black tie to complete the look. Boots or shoes are appropriate footwear.

Rabbits: Participants should wear a white long sleeve shirt with black pants or jeans. A long white lab coat is appro-priate attire while showing. Boots or clean neat shoes should be worn.

Goats: Goats are shown in the same apparel as Dairy Cattle. A white shirt, long sleeves are preferred with white pants or jeans. Boots or a good solid shoe may be worn.

Sheep: A long sleeve shirt white or conservative colors, with black pants or jeans. A tie completes the outfit. Boot or a good solid shoe may be worn.

Swine: A white shirt, long sleeves are preferred, with plant pants. A boot or good solid shoe should be worn.

Beef: Members participating in Beef can be a bit more creative. A long sleeve shirt is still preferred. Western styles are acceptable and a tie or vest can be added to make an extra  special outfit. Clean pants/jeans and a boot or solid shoe should be worn by the member.

Dairy: A white shirt, long sleeves are preferred with white pants or jeans. Boots or a good solid shoe may be worn.

Horse: Members in the horse area can get real creative. Outfits can range from a long sleeve shirt, to shirts with a vest or a show jacket. (Long sleeves are a must). Show pants or jeans finish the clothes. Western boots are required for safety reasons and a western hat completes the look.

Llamas: Members exhibiting llamas show in basic black and white clothing. Most members wear a white shirt with black pants.

These are guidelines for fitting and showmanship classes. The most important thing to remember about show apparel is that it fits properly, is clean, and free of advertisements!

Work Bee

There will be additional "Work Bees" to get the barns ready for the Northern District Fair.  Please call Lee or Mary Hebner at 829-3215 for dates and times.  The more people that come and help out, the more fun and the quicker the job will be done.

Bits Acceptable for Use in 4-H Dressage

Mylar snaffle bit has been approved by USA Equestrian and the USDF for usei in Training-Second level Dressage.  Also, after consulting with the MI 4-H Horse Judges Advisory Committee, it was determined that this bit will also be acceptable for use in Michigan 4-H Dressage classes.

Northern District Fair Exhibitors

The Fair books are now available and located in various locations in the Cadillac area.  We do have a quantity of books in our office for distribution, however, books will not be mailed from this office, so stop in and pick one up any time Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m..

Be sure to fill out the correct forms for projects, camping, and stall reservations and return to the Northern District Fair office with the correct monies.  Be sure to take notice of due dates; they are not all the same.

In an effort to give the 4-H youth an opportunity to talk with an evaluator about their project, the evaluating will take place on Saturday, August 9, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the civic arena.  Each exhibitor needs to be present and will need to take their exhibit to the proper evaluator.

Michigan Families Can Practice Reading and Eating Healthy At the Same Time

Healthy families are families who read. MSU Extension (MSUE) helps families by developing and promoting easy-to-use family-focused materials that promote reading and literacy. Children love to read books about things that take place in their everyday lives including choosing and eating healthy foods, being active, participating in sports, and sharing family mealtime.

The Michigan Team Nutrition Booklist can help families identify, locate, and use children’s books to reinforce healthful habits that can last a lifetime, while teaching beginning reading skills that are consistent with the State of Michigan Curriculum Framework.

The Michigan Team Nutrition Booklist contains over 300 books with positive food and physical activity messages for children. The booklist also contains creative ideas to link books with nutrition education activities at school and home.

The booklist is available online at: www.tn.fcs.msue.msu.edu.  To order a printed copy of The Michigan Team Nutrition Booklist (publication #E2835, contact the MSU Bulletin Office at 517-353-6740.

For more information on this topic and other food, nutrition, health or money management issues, contact Linda Cronk, Family & Consumer Science Extension Educator at 779-9480, or you may email her at: cronkl@msue.msu.edu

Put Some Calcium in Your Diet

Shelly Psaros, FNP Associate, states that the vegetables with the most calcium are spinach, brussel sprouts, swiss chard, broccoli, artichokes, celery, snap beans, cabbage, carrots, and lima beans.   A great dish to make that is both delicious and eye appealing is a mixture of the above vegetables.

Pan Vegetables

Ingredients:
6 c     vegetables, shredded or diced; use any of the
              following vegetables: cabbage, carrots, spinach,
corn, beets, green beans, or summer squash
    1 tb    margaine
    1/4 c  water

Directions:
    1. Wash, shred, or slice fresh vegetables
    2.  In frying pan, melt margarine
    3.  Add 1/4 cup water and vegetables. Cover to hold
in steam. Cook over low heat until vegetables are
         crisp-tender.
    4.  Stir occasionally to keep vegetables from sticking;
You may need to add a little more water if
          vegetables are not "done."

Serving Suggestion:
Serve over rice, pasta/noodles, or in a casserole dish over mashed potatoes.
