A volunteer program sponsored by Michigan State University since 1978 and coordinated by county units.   It is a horticulture education and volunteer leader training program. It is designed to not only expand the education level of horticulture volunteers but to also provide volunteers with an opportunity to share this information with others.

To prepare Volunteer Master Gardeners for their role in the community, MSU Extension provides an in-depth training program.  Staff from Michigan State University Extension, MSU faculty and local horticulturist serve as the training team for the program.  The training is provided in a classroom format series over 12 weeks.  They are provided with resource materials, handouts, fact sheets and bulletins as resources for their work.

The goal of the Volunteer Master Gardener Training Program is two fold:

  1. To educate home gardeners in practical, environmentally sound horticulture methods and related topics.

  2. To train members to be multipliers of information to the public through the Hotline, giving presentations or lectures, answering questions at event boots, etc.

There are approximately 90 active Master Gardeners in Van Buren County.  Since the beginning of the program in Van Buren over 6000 hours of volunteer service has been performed in the county.
