Cotinus obovatus--American Smoketree
Hardiness Zones: 4 to 8
Height: 25 ft Spread: 20 ft Form: rounded
Type: deciduous shrub
Annual Growth Rate: more than 18 inches
Comments: This small tree or multi-stemmed large shrub is
grown for its excellent fall foliage color. In the fall,
the leaves turn a combination of yellow, orange, red and
purple. The plant grows best in high pH (alkaline soils)
that have good drainage. American smoketree is reported
to have weak wood and so may be susceptible to storm
damage. The green flowers are born in panicles but are
not particularly ornamental.
