Ornamental Plants plus Version 3.0 - 00001964
11/12/99
Cornus sanguineum--Bloodtwig Dogwood
Hardiness Zones: 4 to 7
Height: 10 ft Spread: 10 ft Form: rounded
Type: deciduous shrub
Annual Growth Rate: 12 to 18 inches
Flowers: White
Fruit: Black
Comments: The common name refers to the shrub's main
ornamental trait, red twig color in winter. The white
flowers are produced in late spring and are followed by
black fruit. A tendency to sucker may cause the plant to
form dense thickets of stems.
Cultivars:
'Winter Beauty' - A compact form with yellowish-orange
twigs and bright yellow fall color.
'Winter Flame' - Plants that are 5 feet tall and wide
have winter stems that are yellow at the base,
becoming red to orange at the tips (Vis. 1). The fall
foliage color is yellow and orange.
