Betula lenta--Sweet Birch
Hardiness Zones: 3 to 8
Height: 50 ft Spread: 40 ft Form: rounded
Type: deciduous tree
Annual Growth Rate 12 to 18 inches
Comments: Sweet Birch (Vis. 1) is pyramidal when young but
becomes oval to rounded when mature. The bark is shiny,
reddish brown on young trees but becomes gray as the tree
ages. An acid, moist soil is preferred. Sweet birch may be
more resistant to borer than are white-barked birches. The
fall foliage color is golden yellow and considered to be
quite good. The stems taste and smell like wintergreen.
Avoid planting sweet birch on dry sites.
