Selecting Tender Bulbs
The term "summer flowering bulbs" is sometimes used for
these plants. The heading denotes those plants planted in
the spring, dug in the fall, and stored over winter. Also
included are plants not dug in the fall but bloom in the
summer.
Summer flowering bulbs have varied uses. They can fill in
bare spots where larger plants are needed. The larger
flowering bulbs can be used as temporary screens. Some
can be used in shade but most prefer full sun. They are
best in mass plantings but the digging and planting of
such a bed can be a lot of work.
Don't buy bulbs showing signs of rot or disease. Store
summer flowering bulbs at a temperature between 60 and 65
degrees.
