Sassafras albidum--Sassafras

Hardiness Zones: 4 to 9
Height: 45 ft Spread: 30 ft Form: spreading
Type: deciduous tree
Annual Growth Rate: 12 to 18 inches

Comments: Sassafras is difficult to transplant and, in an
undisturbed area, the tree forms thickets. There are
three distinct leaf forms on one tree and the twigs and
roots are aromatic when bruised. Sassafras grows best in
a sunny location and in a well-drained soil. The fall
color varies with the particular plant but is generally
yellow, red (Vis. 1) or a combination. The fruit are purple
and borne on bright red stems. Sassafras has fairly brittle
wood.
