PYRUS DISEASE PROBLEMS

Pears are susceptible to fire blight. Tips of infected
branches appear scorched and burnt. The leaves droop,
turn brown, but remain hanging on the tree. The bacteria
wash down the branch and forms cankers on the trunk. A
crack forms between healthy and diseased bark. Bark
inside the canker is often shredded and peeling. When the
canker girdles the stem the tree dies. The Callery Pears
are resistant to fire blight, but are not immune. There
is no satisfactory chemical control. Prune out infected
branch tips well below the infected area.
