Prunus sargentii--Sargent Cherry
Hardiness Zones: 4 to 7
Height: 30 ft Spread: 30 ft Form: rounded
Type: deciduous tree
Annual Growth Rate: 12 to 18 inches
Flowers: Pink
Comments: Sargent Cherry (Vis. 2) has bronze-colored young
foliage. The single, pink flowers (Vis. 4) are borne in
early spring, in fact, it is one of the first trees to
flower. The one and a half inch flowers are borne 2 to 6
per cluster. The fruit are round and black but not
ornamental. The fall color (Vis. 3), probably the best of
all the cherries, is combinations of orange and red.
Cultivars:
'Columnaris' - An upright, columnar tree only 15 feet
wide.
x hillieri 'Spire' - Possibly a P. sargentii by P.
yedoensis hybrid. This upright plant will be 30 feet
tall but only 10 feet wide. The single flowers are
pink (Vis. 1).
