Pinus thunbergii--Japanese Black Pine

Type: narrow-leaved evergreen tree
Annual Growth Rate: 12 to 18 inches

Comments: Japanese Black Pine (Vis. 1) is an excellent,
small, irregularly shaped, pine. The plant tolerates dry
soil and salt. The dark green, twisted needles are 5 to 7
inches long.

Cultivars:
'Angelica's Thunderhead' - The buds appear as white
"candles" on the tips of the branches.
'Banshoho' - A rounded, dense plant with dark green
foliage.
'Monina' (Majestic Beauty TM) - A salt tolerant plant
that is also resistant to smog. Retains its dark
green color in cold weather.
'Mt. Hood Prostrate' - A low, slow-growing, horizontal
form.
'Oculis Draconis' - Needles variegated with yellow.
'Pygmaea' - A rounded shape.
'Thunderhead' - The numerous white buds contrast with the
dark green foliage (Vis. 2).
'Torafumatsu' - The leaves have yellow variegation.
'Yatsubusa' - A name that applies to several different
dwarf forms.
