11/12/99
Lychnis chalcedonica--Maltese Cross
Hardiness Zones: 3 to 10
Height: 3 ft Spread: 15 in
Type: herbaceous perennial
Flowers: Red
Comments: Maltese Cross has bright scarlet (Vis. 1) flowers
and is easy to grow. The plant grows best in full sun and
in any good soil, if provided with a constant moisture
supply. The blooming period is extended if faded flowers
are removed. Lychnis is short-lived in poorly drained soil.
Double flowered varieties are propagated by division.
Self-seeded volunteer plants can become a problem if
plants are allowed to set seed.
Propagation: Propagation is by seed or division. Division
is done in spring or fall. Seed is started in the spring.
