Juniperus virginiana--Eastern Red Cedar

Type: narrow-leaved evergreen tree
Annual Growth Rate: 12 to 18 inches

Comments: Red Cedar is best when given a sunny location.
The plant develops a brownish tint in winter and is
sometimes used in windbreaks. The fruit (Vis. 4) is a blue
berry and is ornamental when produced in quantity. This
adaptable plant can be grown in a variety of adverse
conditions.

Cultivars:
'Blue Arrow' - A narrow upright form with blue foliage.
'Blue Mountain' - A broad, somewhat rounded plant with
bluish foliage and heavy production of blue fruits.
'Burkii' - A 25-foot, pyramidal form with blue-green
foliage that becomes purplish in cold weather.
'Canaerti' - A compact, pyramid when mature but looser
when young (Vis. 1). Bluish white berries are an
additional benefit. A height of 20 feet.
'Cupressifolia' ('Hillspire') - A dense, pyramidal form
15 feet tall and 8 feet wide. The foliage is dark
green.
Emerald Sentinel TM ('Corcorcor') - A columnar form with
emerald green foliage and a height of 25 to 30 feet.
'Grey Owl' - A spreading plant reaching a height of 3
feet and spreading 6 feet. The foliage is silvery-
gray. J. x media.
'Idyllwild' - A pyramidal form with green foliage and a
height of 15 feet with a spread of 7 feet.
'Manhattan Blue' - Dark, blue-green foliage is
displayed on a pyramidal form 12 feet tall and 8 feet
wide.
'Pendula' - Plants nearly 40 feet tall have weeping
branchlets.
'Princeton Sentry' - A narrow, columnar form reaching a
height of 25 feet. The foliage is bluish-green.
'Taylor' - This cultivar will be about 25 feet tall but
only 3 feet wide (Vis. 2).
