Ornamental Plants plus Version 3.0 - 00000740
11/12/99
Hyacinthus x orientalis--Hyacinth
Height: 15 in Spacing: 9 in
Type: hardy bulb
Flowers: Blue, pink, purple, red, white, yellow
Comments: Hyacinths produce fragrant flowers (Vis. 1) and
like a well-drained soil and a sunny location. The flowers
last longer in partial shade. Hyacinths do not like dry
soil and decline fairly rapidly after the first year. A
winter mulch is suggested. Plant the bulbs 6 inches deep in
regular garden soil but in heavy soil plant 4 to 5 inches
deep. In sand increase the planting depth to 7 to 8
inches.
Propagation: The bulbs may be divided when dormant.
