Comments: Large Fothergilla produces flowers (Vis. 1) that
are 3 inches long. The fall color (Vis. 2) is red and
yellow. The flowers have no petals and the parts that look
like petals are actually the stamens. The flowers are borne
in the spring before the leaves appear. The plant likes a
cool, moist root zone and a sandy loam. Little pruning is
needed other than an occasional thinning of older
branches. The branches may be layered in the autumn.
