Flowers: White, pink
Comments: Smoke Tree grows best in a sunny location and a
well-drained loam however, it is very useful in dry, rocky
soil. The large panicles (Vis. 5) of flowers, produced in
early summer, give the effect of a cloud of smoke. The fall
color (Vis. 4) is usually good and ranges from yellow to
orange.
Cultivars:
'Atropurpurea' - The leaves are dark purple.
'Nordine' - Originated at the Morton Arboretum.
Produces large, red plumes in mid-summer. Hardiest
of the purple-leaved cultivars but stems may kill to
the ground in severe winters.
'Pop's Pink Champagne' - An upright shrub, wider than
high with light mauve foliage.
'Purpureus' - The white flowers contrast with the
purple leaves.
'Royal Purple' - The foliage (Vis. 1) is dark purple and
the flowers are tinged pink or purple.
'Velvet Cloak' - The leaves (Vis. 2) are dark purple and
the flowers are pink.
