Cornus officinalis--Japanese Cornel
Hardiness Zones: 5 to 8
Height: 20 ft Spread: 20 ft Form: rounded
Type: deciduous tree
Annual Growth Rate: 12 to 18 inches
Flowers: Yellow
Fruit: Red
Comments: Japanese Cornel looks like Cornus mas, Cornelian
Cherry. The bark (Vis. 1) of C. officinalis is more
ornamental, but is hidden by the leaves. The flowers are
larger (Vis. 2) and later than those of C. mas, but
otherwise the trees are much the same. This large shrub or
small tree produces red fruits (Vis. 3).
