Cladrastis kentuckea (lutea)--Yellow-wood
Hardiness Zones: 4 to 8
Height: 40 ft Spread: 35 ft Form: (Vis. 1) rounded
Type: deciduous tree
Annual Growth Rate: less than 12 inches
Flowers: White
Comments: Yellow-wood bears hanging clusters of white
flowers (Vis. 2). Yellow-wood is hard to transplant but may
be grown in both high pH and acidic soils. The tree
develops yellow fall color and has brittle wood that make it
prone to storm damage. Remove lower branches when the tree
is young to prevent formation of a short trunk. The tree
bleeds profusely when pruned in spring.
Cultivars:
'Perkins Pink' - A pink flowered form.
'Sweetshade' - A Princeton Nurseries selection reported
to have a vigorous growth habit and resistance to
leafhoppers.
