Celtis occidentalis--Hackberry
Hardiness Zones: 2 to 9
Height: 50 ft Spread: 50 ft Form: rounded
Type: deciduous tree
Annual Growth Rate: 12 to 18 inches
Comments: Hackberry is not the most desirable tree. It is
often used in street planting as it tolerates adverse
growing conditions and grows in sun or partial shade. The
mature bark is rough and corky and the fruit is small and
turns from orange red to purple.
Cultivars:
'Magnifica' (C. occidentalis X C. laevigata) - A less
hardy (zone 5) but larger tree that is very drought
resistant, salt tolerant and able to withstand
compacted soils.
'Prairie Pride' - Oval branch development.
