11/12/99
Caryopteris x clandonensis--Bluebeard
Hardiness Zones: 6 to 9
Height: 3 ft Spread: 3 ft Form: rounded
Type: deciduous shrub
Annual Growth Rate: more than 18 inches
Flowers: Blue
Comments: This is a relatively small shrub (Vis. 3) that
will die back to the ground during the winter. It is
suggested that it be cut back to the ground to enhance
production of new wood on which the flowers will be borne.
The blue flowers (Vis. 4) are produced in late summer when
few other shrubs bloom.
Cultivars:
'Arthur J. Simmonds' - Light blue flowers are combined
with improved hardiness.
'Blue Mist' - The blue flowers contrast with the
silvery-green foliage.
'Dark Knight' - The fragrant, dark purple flowers
attract hummingbirds.
'Heavenly Blue' - Dark blue flowers, compact growth
habit.
'Kew Blue' - Dark blue flowers on a small, bushy plant.
'Longwood Blue' - Sky blue flowers and silver foliage.
'Worcester Gold' - The young foliage (Vis. 2) is yellow
but turns yellowish-green as it matures. The flowers
are blue and the plant (Vis. 1) is listed a drought
tolerant.
