Comments: European Hornbeam may be low branched, has
yellow fall color (Vis. 2) and enough pruning tolerance to
be used as a hedge plant. The tree is valued for its
adaptable nature, particularly in urban settings.
Cultivars: There are many interesting cultivars of
European hornbeam but relatively few are generally
available.
'Columnaris' - A narrow, upright plant with a slow growth
rate.
'Fastigiata' - An upright, pest free tree with a yellow
fall color (Vis. 1).
'Frans Fontaine' - An upright tree reaching a height of
35 feet and a spread of 15 feet.
'Pendula' - Weeping habit (Vis. 3).
