Ornamental Plants plus Version 3.0 - 00000258
11/12/99
Calycanthus floridus--Sweetshrub, Strawberry Bush
Hardiness Zones: 4 to 9
Height: 9 ft Spread: 10 ft Form: rounded
Type: deciduous shrub
Annual Growth Rate: 12 to 18 inches
Flowers: brownish-red
Comments: Sweetshrub is more of an oddity than an
ornamental. The flowers (Vis. 1) are clusters of long,
narrow petals and have a fragrance similar to that of
strawberries. The leaves (Vis. 2) and fruits are aromatic
when crushed. The plant grows in sun or shade but is taller
in shade. The fall color is yellow.
