Cactus
Type: house plant
Comments: There are many different cacti. The following
general comments provide guidelines but are no substitute
for specific information about specific species of cactus.
Cacti require high light intensity but there are
exceptions. The soil needs to be well-drained and any
packaged, cactus potting soil may be used. From March to
September, water as for any house plant that prefers to
dry slightly between waterings. In winter, the plants
like to get very dry and are watered only to keep them
from shriveling. Some cacti are forest cacti and so do
not tolerate dry soil. It is essential to know the winter
water requirements of the particular cactus being grown.
Use a low nitrogen fertilizer every 2 weeks from June
through September. Cacti tolerate fairly cool
temperatures but the exact temperature used depends on the
cactus grown. The range for most is from 65 to 85
degrees. April is the best time to repot cacti. Repot
every second year, or sooner if the roots get crowded.
Propagation: Propagation is by cuttings, seeds or
offsets. Lay cuttings in the sun for at least 2 days
before putting them in rooting media.
