Ornamental Plants plus Version 3.0 - 00000210
11/12/99
Bergenia cordifolia--Heartleaf Bergenia
Hardiness Zones: 4 to 10
Height: 18 in Spacing: 15 in
Type: herbaceous perennial
Flowers: Red, white, pink
Comments: Bergenia produces flower clusters on a tall
stalk (Vis. 2). The foliage is semi-evergreen and turns
purplish during the winter. The plant grows in sun or
partial shade but flowers earlier and has better winter
foliage color in sun. Bergenia is suitable for use in areas
with wet soil. As the plants age, the centers of the clumps
become bare. Slugs can be a problem.
Propagation: Propagation is by seeds sown in spring, or
by division done in spring. Set the crown just below the
soil surface when replanting.
