Belamcanda chinensis--Blackberry Lily

Flowers: Orange

Comments: Blackberry Lily grows in sun and a well-drained
sandy soil. The plant may overwinter outdoors if protected.
They may also be dug in the fall and stored through the
winter. The foliage resembles that of iris. The flowers
(Vis. 1) are orange with darker, red makings or they can be
yellow (Vis. 3) and are present in late summer. These are
followed by clusters of black seeds that give the plant its
common name. Iris
borer could be a problem.

Propagation: Propagation is by division in the spring.
Getting a blooming size plant from seed takes 3 to 4
years.

Cultivars:
'Hello Yellow' - A dwarf, 24 inches all, with yellow
flowers (Vis. 2).
