Fruit: Red turning dark purple to black
Comments: The Allegheny Serviceberry (Vis. 2) often forms
several trunks and grows in shade or partial shade. The
tree is short-lived and can be used as a filler plant or to
attract birds. The main ornamental feature is the white
flowers (Vis. 3) borne in drooping clusters in mid-spring.
The purplish, black berries (Vis. 4) are sweet and juicy but
are soon eaten by birds. The fall color is yellow to red.
Cultivars:
'Cumulus' - A very vigorous, upright growing plant with
orange-red fall color.
'Prince Charles' (Plant Patent 6039) - An upright, oval
tree, 30 feet tall and 20 feet wide.
'Rogers' (Lustre(R) - An upright, open plant with an
orange-red fall color.
'Snowcloud' (Plant Patent 7203) - A narrow tree bearing
large white flowers that are followed by the
purplish-black fruits. (Vis. 1)
