Amelanchier arborea--Downy Serviceberry

Fruit: red turning dark purple to black
Comments: The main ornamental features of Downy
Serviceberry are flowers (Vis. 2) and fall color, the fruits
are not as ornamental. The white flowers (Vis. 3) are
produced with the leaves in spring. The flowers are
followed by the purple fruit but are often soon eaten by
birds. The fall color is orange to red. This Amelanchier
is suitable for naturalized planting and to attract birds.
The tree suckers from the base.
Cultivars:
'Ballerina' - Large white flowers, an upright growth
habit and good fall color are traits of this
cultivar.
'Glenform' (Rainbow Pillar TM) - A columnar form with
good fall color. Reaches a height of about 12 feet.
'Prince William' - A large, multi-stemmed shrub that
fruits very heavily. In other respects it is similar
to the species (Vis. 6).
'Refzam' (Reflection TM) - An oval, upright trees
reaching a height of 25 feet and spreading 20 feet. A
vigorous tree with the same ornamental traits as the
species.
'Sprizam' - (Spring Glory TM) - This upright cultivar
reaches a height (Vis. 1) of 12 feet and a spread of 9
feet. The fall foliage color is dark yellow and orange.
'Trazam' - (Tradition TM) - 'Trazam' develops a strong
central leader and an oval to upright habit. It will
reach a height of about 30 feet and a spread of 20
feet (Vis. 5).
