Acer platanoides--Norway Maple
Hardiness Zones: 4 to 7
Height: 50 ft Spread: 50 ft Form: rounded
Type: deciduous tree
Annual Growth Rate: 12 to 18 inches
Comments: Norway Maple's dense shade and shallow root system
provide stiff competition for lawn grasses. Surface and
girdling roots (Vis. 19) are maintenance difficulties. The
tree is easily transplanted and has yellow (Vis. 18) flowers
and fall color (Vis. 17). Often used, perhaps too often, as
a park or street tree (Vis. 16). Wrap trunks of young trees
to help prevent frost crack formation.
Cultivars:
'Alberta Park' - A vigorous tree with an oval crown.
Perhaps more resistant to frost cracking than other
cultivars.
'Bailpride' (Oregon Pride Maple) - The leaves are
deeply cut and turn gold-bronze in fall. The tree
has performed well at the University of Minnesota
arboretum trials.
'Cleveland' - Fast growth and compact branching are
combined with tolerance to summer heat. The fall
color is yellow (Vis. 1).
'Columnarbroad' (Parkway TM Maple) - An oval tree with
a good central leader. Reported to be verticillium
tolerant and useful in urban situations.
'Columnare' - A narrow, upright tree with yellow fall
foliage color (Vis. 2).
'Crimson King' - The most common (Vis. 4) purple-leaved
Norway Maple. (Vis. 3) It grows more slowly than
green-leaved types.
Crimson Sentry TM (Plant Patent 3258) - A compact, dense,
upright tree with purple foliage. The height will be
25 feet and the spread 15 feet (Vis. 5).
'Deborah' (Plant Patent 4933) - The foliage is
reddish-purple (Vis. 7) in the spring becoming dark
bronze-green in the summer. This vigorous (Vis. 6)
tree forms a strong central leader.
'Dissectum' - A small, bushy tree with deeply cut
leaves that resembles a Japanese Maple.
'Drummondii' - The leaves are edged with white.
Individual branches may revert to green and must be
pruned out.
Emerald Queen TM - A fast-growing tree with a straight
trunk and good branching tendencies suitable for use
as a street tree (Vis. 8).
'Ezestre'(Easy Street TM) - A bud sport of
'Columnare' with a faster growth rate and slightly
wider, pyramidal form (Vis. 9).
'Fairview' - The foliage is reddish purple when young
and turns gold in the fall. Narrower and more
upright than 'Schwedler' or 'Deborah'.
'Globosum' - A dense, compact, fifteen foot tree with a
globe-shaped head. The fall color is yellow.
'Jade Glen' - A fast-growing cultivar forming a
broader, more open canopy than most selections.
Reported to be verticillium tolerant (Vis. 10).
'Lamis' (Crystal) - Selected by Bailey Nurseries for
its vigorous growth, straight trunk and improved
branching habit, especially when young. Reportedly
better branching than 'Emerald Luster' with a lighter
colored leaf tip.
'Medzam' (Medallion TM) - A broadly oval tree
developing a dense crown 45 feet tall and 40 feet
wide (Vis. 11).
'Pond' (Emerald Luster(R)) (Plant Patent 4837) - A
vigorous selection with a rounded canopy.
'Princeton Gold' - A selection with bright yellow new
foliage (Vis. 12) borne on an oval growth habit.
'Royal Red' - Similar to Crimson King with its purple
foliage (Vis. 13) but considered to have better cold
hardiness.
'Schwedleri' - The new foliage is bright reddish purple
turning dark green with age.
'Summershade' - A fast-growing tree with a rounded
crown (Vis. 14) and lighter green foliage than other
cultivars. Considered to be more heat resistant.
'Superform' - Selected for its uniform branch angle and
overall symmetrical shape.
'Variegatum' - An upright, rounded tree with leaves
variegated with white during the growing season,
turning yellow in the fall (Vis. 15).
