Comments: Hedge maple is dense, low-branched and has a
rounded form (Vis. 2). The common name alludes to the
plant's tolerance of severe pruning. The main ornamental
feature is the yellow fall color (Vis. 3). Hedge maple
tolerates dry, compacted, and alkaline soils and will grow
in clay.
Cultivars:
'Compactum' - A dwarf about 6 feet tall but spreading
farther.
'Evelyn' - Queen Elizabeth is the trademark name for
this medium sized tree introduced by J. Frank Schmidt
and Son, Boring, OR. As compared to the species,
the cultivar is more vigorous, has better branch
angles, and is upright when young.
