Spider Mites (Tetranychus spp.)

List of files and visuals associated with this text.

Spider mites are very small (1/64 inch) insect relatives.
The body is pale yellow to red, with two dark spots
sometimes visible (Vis. 1). Mites feed on the underside
of leaflets, with damage first appearing as yellow
flecking on the upper surface (Vis. 2). Heavy
infestations kill the leaves and result in "scorched"
areas in the field (Vis. 3). Mite outbreaks are
associated with drought conditions. Infestations in the
South can be particularly severe in fields previously
treated with foliar insecticides. Spider mites are a
sporadic problem in both the Midwest and South.
