Potato Leafhopper (Empoasca fabae)

List of files and visuals associated with this text.

Adult potato leafhoppers are 1/8 inch long, wedge-shape,
and yellowish to pale green in color (Vis. 1). Immatures
or nymphs look similar but are wingless. Leafhoppers are
found primarily on the underside of the leaves where they
pierce the veins and feed on plant juices. This causes
the leaf to turn yellow to red in color from the feeding
point outward (Vis. 2). Although leafhoppers are
generally not a problem, high numbers can stunt soybean
growth. This pest is found throughout the South and
Midwest.
