Brown Stem Rot (Phialophora gregata)
List of files and visuals associated with this text.
Losses from brown stem rot are greatest when cool wether
during pod-fill is followed by hot, dry weather.
External symptoms appear late in the season when leaves
show necrotic brown interveinal areas. Leaves later turn
dull brown, dry, and drop prematurely. Groups of
infected plants have a brownish cast and lodge. Stems of
infected plants show dull, dark reddish-brown
discoloration from roots to several external nodes and
within the stem (Vis. 1). The fungus survives in crop
debris. Consider crop rotation and planting resistant
varieties for control.
