Prunus sargentii--Sargent Cherry

Comments: Sargent Cherry has bronze-colored young foliage.  
The single, pink flowers are borne in early spring, in      
fact, it is one of the first trees to flower.  The one and  
a half inch flowers are borne 2 to 6 per cluster.  The      
fruit are round and black but not ornamental.  The fall     
color, probably the best of all the cherries, is            
combinations of orange and red.                             

Cultivars:                                                  
   'Columnaris' - An upright, columnar tree only 15 feet    
     wide.                                                  
   x hillieri 'Spire' - Possibly a P. sargentii by P.       
     yedoensis hybrid.  This upright plant will be 30 feet  
     tall but only 10 feet wide.  The single flowers are    
     pink.
