European Union Expansion Takes Effect
Austria, Finland, and Sweden joined the European Union on
January 1, 1995, bringing membership to 15 countries and
increasing the EU population to 373 million. Upon
accession, each new member began the difficult process of
adjusting to the EU's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP),
including immediate price alignment to EU levels. For the
United States, the overall trade effects of accession are
unlikely to be significant.
