Investment in Mexico:

Mexico holds many strong long-term opportunities for
U.S.businesses. The peso devaluation has scared many
off,
and that's understandable. The peso has regained its
strength to the dollar. Mexico, like so many other
countries, tends to experience large fluctuations in its
economic health.

Mexico is no different than many other countries where
business doesn't get done unless there's a good business
relationship solidly in place. While now may not be a
good time to sell U.S. products in Mexico, it's an
excellent time to invest in those ever-important
relationships. Sooner or later, Mexico's economy will
recover, and Mexican business partners will definitely
remember who was there with them when "the going was
tough" then they decide who they'll do business with.
Invest now, reap later. Don't get caught a year from now
with an improving Mexican economy and no solid
relationships in place.

Dismantle the U.S. Department of Commerce?

In an attempt to save the US government more than $7.7
billion over the next five years, legislators have
developed The Department of Commerce Dismantling Act.
Headed by the Republicans, this bill will eliminate the
US Department of Commerce (USDOC). In the dismantling of
the USDOC, some of the programs would be transferred to
different departments, while others would simply be
eliminated.

What effect will this have on American businesses? It's
still unclear whether business will indeed be hurt by
this proposal. Some are saying that the US is shooting
itself in the foot by eliminating the USDOC at a time
when competing trading nations such as Germany and Japan
are increasing their government support for exporters.
Others say that many federal agencies play the same role
in US trade promotion as the USDOC.
