Profile of Home Workers

General Telephone Company (GTE) has done a survey of
the work-at-home employee. They define work-at-home
employees as "anyone who works at home eight or more
hours weekly, or operates a small business from the
home." They report that almost 25 million Americans
are home workers. By the year 2020 they predict a full
30% of all the nation's work-force may be
telecommuting.

Current home workers, says GTE, are likely to be
married, with minor children, and largely in the age
range of 35-45, well educated with 51% having some
college or post-high school degrees and an average
income of $42,000. Home workers are largely in service
(42%), but 12% are in manufacturing, 9% in
wholesale/retail, 9% in financial service, insurance
and real estate, and 8% in construction.
