NEWBIZ is the computerized database from the Michigan Department of Commerce. NEWBIZ is available through local libraries, chambers of commerce, and Small Business Development Centers. Included in the database is general information on starting a business such as how to decide on business structure, federal tax number, state tax number, and employer information. The major use of the database, however, is to give licensing information on 500 types of businesses.
An Extension office could offer this to the public by becoming a site of the database. It would just make a connection through MERIT. MERIT cities are: Ann Arbor, Battle Creek, Benton Harbor, Big Rapids, Birmingham, Cheboygan, Dearborn, Detroit, East Lansing, Flint, Grand Rapids, Holland, Houghton, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Marquette, Mt. Pleasant, Muskegon, Pellston, Rochester, Saginaw, Southfield, Sterling Heights, Traverse City and Wayne. If you are interested, contact Diane Cranmer at (517) 373- 2778. You will receive the keyword list, as well as directions for accessing the system.
