ERIC TITLE NUMBER: ED317938 AUTHOR: Geller, William W.
TITLE: Lesbians/Gays: Helping a Campus Understand: Looking
for New Attitudes.
YEAR PUBLISHED: 1990
NOTE: 27 p.; Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the
National Association of Student Personnel Administrators
(72nd, New Orleans, LA, March 14-17, 1990).
ABSTRACT: This document describes, in a narrative mode, a
simulated public education campaign to stimulate cross
campus awareness of, and dialogue about, attitudes toward
homosexuality. The campaign described begins with a letter
to incoming freshmen, alerting them to the presence of gay
and lesbian students and emphasizing the need for mutual
respect and common decency. This is followed, during
orientation, by a survey of student attitudes toward
homosexuals. Next comes a series of public notices,
overhead displays, and a kiosk, providing information and
stimulating public debate about homosexual issues, all
prepared by a Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual support group. Many
examples of student responses, both supportive and hostile,
are provided. The campaign culminates with a Declaration of
Support, delivered to all students, which called on the
university to "promote learning, understanding, and
acceptance of others' sexual orientation." Handouts from
the simulation are included. (TE)

This is an ERIC database document. ERIC is the National
Education Information Network for providing ready access
to the literature of education -descriptions of exemplary
programs, research and development efforts, and related
information that can be used in developing more effective
educational programs. The ERIC database is currently
available on CD-ROM in the main library (ground floor of
the west wing) at Michigan State University. To locate
ERIC documents in the library identify the first line of
each record (i.e., the field ERIC TITLE NUMBER). ED
following ERIC TITLE NUMBER indicates an ERIC document,
an unpublished research study. Most of these items are
available in the Microforms library, located on the 3rd
floor of the west wing. All you need is the six digit ED
number. If EJ follows ERIC TITLE NUMBER the item is a
journal article. The complete journal name is listed after
the code JOURNAL.
