TITLE: Minorities in Higher Education. Ninth Annual Status
Report.

YEAR PUBLISHED: 1991
NOTE: 63 p.
AVAILABILITY: copies, $7.00 ea.).

ABSTRACT: This report updates information on trends in the
participation of Hispanics, American Indians, Asian
Americans, and African Americans in colleges and
universities. Included are data concerning high school
completion rates, college participation rates,
undergraduate and graduate enrollments, and degree
completion. Because the Hispanic population is the fastest
growing of any other racial or ethnic group in the United
States, yet educational attainment is the lowest, a special
section focuses on the social, demographic, and educational
attainment data for Hispanics. The report outlines the
critical nature of the problem and identifies areas for
future research and policy development. Statistical data
concerning enrollments, high school completion rates, and
degree attainment by race, age, gender, and ethnic group
comprise 50 percent of the report. Among the findings are
the following: (1) Hispanic high school completion rates
and grades continue to be among the poorest of all groups
studied; (2) African Americans and Hispanics made little
progress in achieving parity with Whites in college
participation during the latter half of the 1980s; (3) from
1986 to 1988, minority gains in college enrollments (7.2%)
outpaced gains in total enrollment (4.3%), with Hispanics
and Asian Americans leading other ethnic groups; and (4)
African-Americans and Hispanics persist in college at
considerably lower rates than other groups. (GLR)

This is an ERIC database document. ERIC is the National
Education Information Network for providing ready access
to the literature of education -descriptions of exemplary
programs, research and development efforts, and related
information that can be used in developing more effective
educational programs. The ERIC database is currently
available on CD-ROM in the main library (ground floor of
the west wing) at Michigan State University. To locate
ERIC documents in the library identify the first line of
each record (i.e., the field ERIC TITLE NUMBER). ED
following ERIC TITLE NUMBER indicates an ERIC document,
an unpublished research study. Most of these items are
available in the Microforms library, located on the 3rd
floor of the west wing. All you need is the six digit ED
number. If EJ follows ERIC TITLE NUMBER the item is a
journal article. The complete journal name is listed after
the code JOURNAL.
