ERIC TITLE NUMBER: ED180368 AUTHOR: Fendley, William R., Jr.; And Others
TITLE: A Methodology to Study Promotion, Tenure, and
Termination Among Academic Faculty at the University of
Tennessee, Knoxville.
YEAR PUBLISHED: 1979
NOTE: 17 p.; Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the
Southern Association for Institutional Research (Orlando,
FL, October 1979)
ABSTRACT: A research methodology developed at the
University of Tennessee for determining differences in
rates of promotion, tenure, and termination that are linked
to employee sex or race is discussed. Data were compiled
for each full-time faculty member covering rank, degree,
salary, sex, college, department, time at the university,
and number of years in present rank. It is suggested that
analyses and interpretations stemming from this research
will allow universities to respond to government guidelines
and requirements with concrete and reliable information
that can serve as a basis for monitoring promotion, tenure,
and termination. Comparisons were made for male/female and
black/nonblack faculty. The computer coding structures,
statistical methodology, and data elements are explained.
Appended are the coding structures for data elements; a
data sample; and tenure, and termination reports.

This is an ERIC database document. ERIC is the National
Education Information Network for providing ready access
to the literature of education -descriptions of exemplary
programs, research and development efforts, and related
information that can be used in developing more effective
educational programs. The ERIC database is currently
available on CD-ROM in the main library (ground floor of
the west wing) at Michigan State University. To locate
ERIC documents in the library identify the first line of
each record (i.e., the field ERIC TITLE NUMBER). ED
following ERIC TITLE NUMBER indicates an ERIC document,
an unpublished research study. Most of these items are
available in the Microforms library, located on the 3rd
floor of the west wing. All you need is the six digit ED
number. If EJ follows ERIC TITLE NUMBER the item is a
journal article. The complete journal name is listed after
the code JOURNAL.
